Mastery Learning System

A sample of what Mastery students have built, researched, published, and patented have included:

• Particle Accelerators. Cyclotron and linear particle accelerators, designed and built.
• Avenues Law Review. The first high-school law review in the United States.
• AIO Quadcopter. A 3D-printed drone with original circuitry and programming.
• Hyper-Pop Fashion Line. A collection inspired by the work of Robert Rauschenberg.
• Medical Bracelet Development. Original design taken through patent submission.
• Bacteriophage Research. Investigating applications against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
• Financial Literacy App. Grand prize recipient, Prudential Emerging Visionaries Award, 2023.

MLS students exchange roughly half of their traditional academic schedule for dedicated Mastery time and space. Within it, they balance two things: meeting grade-level learning outcomes and pursuing advanced, self-directed work in the field they are most passionate about. Projects are complex and interdisciplinary, often reaching into real-world applications, and students work alongside faculty advisors and outside industry experts who serve as coaches and intellectual partners.

That combination of autonomy and expert support builds more than deep knowledge. Students learn to manage long-term, high-level work: to define a problem, organize around it, collaborate, stay curious, and see it through. It is the difference between studying a field and actually working in one.
