Commemorating 25 Years Since 9/11

As we honor those who were lost, we also recognize those who risked their lives to save and protect others. Among them are members of the Avenues New York security team who were serving as NYPD officers at the time and were among the first responders to be called to respond that day.

On September 10, students, families, and colleagues gathered in the Black Box Theater to hear firsthand accounts from members of our security team. They shared personal reflections on September 11, their service in the days and months that followed, and the lasting impact of those experiences.

The gathering gave our community an opportunity to pause, listen, and learn from people whose experiences are part of this important chapter in our city’s history. We are grateful to everyone who attended and made space for a difficult but important conversation.

For many in our community, the memories of September 11 remain vivid. For our students, however, it is an event they know primarily through history and the experiences of others. Hearing firsthand accounts helps preserve these important stories while giving students a more personal understanding of an event that profoundly shaped New York City and the world. It also reminds us of the courage, service, and care for others demonstrated in moments of extraordinary difficulty.

The Avenues security team members we recognize for their service on September 11 are Joseph Millan, Luis Orsini, Sean Smalls, Ricardo Rivera, Evelyn Rosa, Andrew Michel, Durnell Dow, Michael Gargano, Tony Longo, and Rick Rondina. Today, they are familiar and valued members of our school community, helping to care for our students, families, and colleagues each day. We are deeply grateful for their service on September 11 and in the years since—and for their willingness to share their experiences with us.
