At Avenues, our mission is the north star that guides every aspect of the student experience. We aspire to graduate students who are humble about their gifts, generous of spirit, aware that their actions make a difference, and prepared to build lives that transcend the ordinary.

Community Engagement is one of the most meaningful ways we bring that mission to life.

We believe education carries with it a responsibility to engage thoughtfully with the world around us. Through authentic partnerships with local organizations, civic leaders, artists, scientists, educators, and neighbors, students extend their learning beyond the classroom while developing empathy, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of the communities they are part of.

Our philosophy

Community Engagement at Avenues is grounded in a simple belief: students don't simply learn about communities; they learn with them.

From our youngest learners through graduation, students engage in age-appropriate experiences that connect classroom learning with real-world challenges and opportunities. These experiences evolve over time, from building awareness and empathy in the Early Learning Center to student-led initiatives, sustained partnerships, and deeper inquiry in the Upper Division, encouraging students to become increasingly thoughtful, informed, and engaged citizens.

Our approach emphasizes reciprocal relationships rather than one-time acts of service. We believe the strongest partnerships are built with communities, not for them. By working alongside local organizations and community members, students learn to listen, collaborate, and contribute with humility while gaining new perspectives that enrich their academic learning.

Long after students leave Avenues, we hope they carry forward not only the knowledge they have gained, but also a lifelong commitment to leading with empathy, acting with purpose, and using their talents in service of something larger than themselves.

Community Day

Each spring, students, families, and colleagues come together for Community Day, partnering with organizations across New York on projects ranging from food security and neighborhood beautification to literacy and environmental stewardship. It's one of the many ways our community puts our values into action.

Hudson Guild partnership

For more than a decade, Avenues has partnered with Hudson Guild through a wide range of initiatives, including intergenerational programs, after-school enrichment, community events, career development, and the annual Adopt-a-Family program. Together, we create opportunities for students to learn alongside one of Chelsea's most important community organizations.

Supporting food security

Students and families work with organizations including St. Clement's Food Pantry, Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, and City Harvest to address food insecurity through annual food drives, service days, meal preparation, and volunteer initiatives that connect learning with meaningful action.

Students leading change

As students grow, so do their opportunities to lead. Through the Upper Division Service Learning Club and independent initiatives, students organize projects such as the Project Cicero Book Drive, clothing and winter coat drives, and partnerships that address needs throughout New York City.

West Chelsea as a classroom

Our Chelsea neighborhood is an extension of the Avenues campus. Students collaborate with partners including the Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Houses, The High Line, The Whitney Museum, and neighborhood organizations, connecting classroom learning with authentic experiences rooted in the local community.

A community beyond our city

As a world school, we believe global citizenship begins close to home. For more than a decade, Avenues has built lasting partnerships with organizations throughout Chelsea and across New York City, creating opportunities for students to learn alongside community members while contributing to initiatives that matter. Whether collaborating with local schools, neighborhood organizations, cultural institutions, senior centers, or food security programs, students discover that meaningful engagement begins with authentic relationships.

These experiences complement programs like Global Journeys and Campus Exchange, reflecting a shared educational philosophy: some of the most meaningful learning happens through direct engagement with the people, places, and communities that shape our world.
