Our curriculum highlights
At Avenues, joy and rigor are part of the same learning experience. Through play, inquiry and purposeful exploration, children build strong foundations in language, literacy, mathematics and global understanding while learning to ask questions, make connections and take on new challenges with confidence. That journey begins in Small World, our program for 1- and 2-year-olds, where children discover the joy of learning and the benefits of bilingual immersion from the very start.
By the end of kindergarten, students leave the Early Learning Center with strong academic foundations, growing independence and the ability to learn, think and communicate across two languages.

LANGUAGE IMMERSION
Reading and writing, in two languages
Through daily reading and writing workshops, children grow from recognizing letters and sounds to reading with confidence and writing stories, poems, and how-to books. Along the way, they develop literacy in English and either Spanish or Mandarin, including character recognition and stroke order in Mandarin. In addition, weekly library sessions in their target language, bring their reading and listening skills to life.

Mathematical foundations
Real mathematical thinking
Children develop a deep understanding of numbers by counting, comparing, adding, subtracting, measuring, recognizing patterns, and exploring shapes. They learn to solve problems, explain their thinking, and see mathematics as a way to make sense of the world.

Interdisciplinary studies
The world, up close
Through Science and World Course, our interdisciplinary global studies program, children explore big ideas like identity, community, and belonging while investigating topics through science, social studies, literacy, and the arts. Whether they’re studying birds and seeds, the history of inventions, or how New York has changed over time, learning is connected, meaningful, and rooted in curiosity.

Arts and creative expression
Art, music, and movement
The arts are woven throughout the curriculum. Kindergartners study artists like Alexander Calder and visit the Whitney Museum to experience his work firsthand, explore the choreography of Alvin Ailey, and create music by singing, playing, listening, and composing—all in English and their target language.
