The Deans Program
Every student in grades 6 through 12 has a dedicated person focused on supporting their success. At Avenues, deans are full-time advisors, mentors, and advocates whose focus is the whole student: social, emotional, and academic. They guide each young person through the transition from childhood to young adulthood, and toward a future that's uniquely their own.

WHAT DEANS DO
Support and advocate
Support
Deans work closely with faculty and serve as a point of contact for students and families. They meet with students on a drop-in or scheduled basis, one-on-one, in small groups, or by grade level, and help students research and navigate the Avenues program and any external programs, from summer opportunities to college.

Advocate
Deans make sure every student is appropriately challenged, working with teachers to ensure students are supported or extended as needed. They serve as an intermediary across a student's academic, social, and home life, so the whole picture is always in view.

Accordion Item 3

Students need someone in their corner who deeply understands the contextual factors influencing their lives. It's our job to get to know the whole student so that we can help them make sense of their place in our community and the world, now and into the future.
FOCUS BY GRADE LEVEL
Guidance that grows with your child

- Grades 6-12
Grades 6 to 8: transitioning to adolescence

As students move toward the Upper Division and adolescence, deans coach executive-functioning skills like organization and time management, and emphasize healthy group dynamics and social interactions, helping students build strength through empathy and community.
Grades 9 to 10: developing healthy skills and habits

[Deans help students understand the high school transcript and the permanent academic record, and encourage future-focused decisions. The focus turns to health and wellbeing, identity, and digital citizenship, while students develop self-advocacy and build strong, healthy bonds with their teachers. text in field]
Grades 11 to 12: fine-tuning and looking ahead

Deans continue to support academic progress with an eye toward each student's post-secondary plans and discuss timelines for standardized tests beginning in grade 10. They help students find their place in our community so they can thrive in the ones they'll join next, and guide them through the full college application process: identifying best-fit programs and cultures, shaping a personal narrative, and building strong relationships with teachers.

LOOKING AHEAD TO COLLEGE
When deans become college counselors
In grades 11 and 12, deans serve as college counselors, drawing on years of experience in college admissions to help students find their ideal path. Our alumni go on to a remarkably diverse set of institutions worldwide, from liberal arts colleges to Ivy League and major research universities, nearby schools, and storied universities abroad. They are scientists, athletes, artists, and more, proud Avenues alumni making their mark globally.
DEANS AND COLLEGE COUNSELORS
The team of experts in every Avenues student’s corner
Deans are full-time advisors whose sole focus is the social-emotional wellbeing and academic success of their students. In grade 11, students are assigned a dean with expertise in college counseling–including years of experience in college admissions departments–to guide them through the application process.
