It is more important than ever for students to be able to think and operate beyond their own borders. The Avenues World Course, a non-western-centric combination of history, geography, economics and social studies, is the centerpiece of an Avenues education. Preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities of the future is not just a dream—it is a mission-driven reality.
Avenues aims to graduate its students with proficiency in at least one other language. In our immersion programs, students use their second language as a tool for discovery across disciplines. In this video, see the profound effect of language immersion in Spanish and Chinese on our youngest students at Avenues New York.
STUDYING ON OTHER CONTINENTS
Avenues encourages older students to expand their horizons through unique study abroad experiences arranged by our in-house provider, Global Journeys. These faculty-guided programs are integrated into the World Course and provide opportunities for the kind of intellectual, cultural and personal growth that is rarely available to students before college.
FINDING YOUR PASSION
The Mastery program is a reflection of Avenues’ commitment to graduating students who are “confident because they excel in a particular passion.” The program provides support and resources for Upper Grades students to pursue a field of study or long term project of special interest to them. This video showcases some recent Mastery projects completed by students at Avenues New York.
Building a culture of awareness of and responsibility for stewardship in the larger community is an important part of an Avenues education. Community awareness and engagement are built into the curriculum in the early grades, with opportunities for self-directed experiences in the middle and upper grades. In this video, students at our New York campus celebrate an impactful collaboration with the senior community at the local community center.
ATHLETICS AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION
From frequent movement and dance classes for our youngest students to more than 25 interscholastic sports teams for older students, Avenues New York provides a range of physical education activities for students. We are looking forward to cultivating an equally thriving athletic community in São Paulo.
At Avenues, students are encouraged to explore the arts in an interdisciplinary fashion–an approach that often leads to collaboration between departments and across divisions. In this video, see how a deep investigation into Beethoven’s Ode to Joy yielded an interdisciplinary–and very multicultural–performance at Avenues New York.
