Avenues: The World School named Apple Distinguished School

Avenues: The World School is pleased to announce that for the second consecutive term, it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2015–2017. The school had also been an Apple Distinguished School for 2013–2015.

This Manhattan nursery through 12th grade school uses Apple products to help realize its vision of global citizenship through education. The program focuses on a one-to-one iPad program for students in grades K–6. The K–6 students also have access to MacBook Air carts. Grades 7–12 focus on a one-plus-one program, in which students receive both an iPad and a MacBook Air. Avenues classrooms are student-centric, collaborative, hands-on and engaging spaces that foster student learning. A community engagement program blends the classroom curriculum with field work, service and global projects such as a campaign for the promotion of girls’ rights. Student multimedia projects are showcased throughout the campus.

The campus occupies a ten-story renovated warehouse that incorporates the best ideas from the fields of technology, ergonomics and environmental design. A flexible environment includes a rotating daily schedule and a block schedule.

Avenues students use a variety of apps to explore expression. They utilize iBeacon to share and receive information in the classroom. The school offers multiple courses in iTunes U for educators to increase their growth in innovation. Professional learning includes a “Lunch and Learn” program, one-to-one learning sessions, access to iTunes U tutorials and collaboration with schools around the world.

The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence and that demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments.

“We are ‘a new school of thought,’” said head of school Robert Mattoon, “and the selection of Avenues: The World School as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment.”

Avenues: The World School opened its first campus in New York in fall 2012. Serving children ages three to 18, Avenues New York will be part of a system of schools—one school with campuses in 20 or more cities around the globe— that emphasizes a commitment to prepare students for citizenship in a world increasingly made smaller through transportation and technology.

Empowered by technology, Avenues students learn in an internationally collaborative environment that reflects the world in which they will live and work. With an emphasis on intensive language acquisition, starting at age three with immersion in either Mandarin Chinese or Spanish, students will graduate with advanced proficiency in a second language; have the opportunity to study at several campuses around the world; and experience a 15-year global studies curriculum created by leading university scholars.
