AASSA at Avenues São Paulo – February 20 – 23, 2019

Student-Centered Projects as a Vehicle for Authentic Engagement in Real World Challenges

The institute will focus on introducing educators to the practices of student-centered learning as a means to engaging students in purpose-driven work. One of the most challenging aspects of shifting to these practices is understanding what this kind of work feels like to a learner, as most of us have not had opportunities to learn in this way in our own schooling. This institute is designed, in part, to remedy that dilemma. Participants will be guided through experiencing a project themselves, first as learners, then as designers of curriculum by participating in what we call a Project Slice, or a piece of a project.

Institute participants will engage in classroom observations, peer discussions, and strategy workshops to inform and further their understanding and appreciation for student-centered learning in and outside of the classroom. As a means of carrying forward our work together, the conference will culminate in a presentation of findings by conference participants based on their experiences and including potential action steps for their classrooms, schools, and communities. Participants will meet with Avenues students who are currently engaged in project work to learn from their perspectives, join discussions with other participants and Avenues faculty and administration about the advantages and challenges of opening a student-centered school in the 21st century, and engage in purpose-driven work through an immersive experience.

The institute is designed for N-12 public and private school teachers, school-leaders, media and technology specialists, and anyone else who is interested in developing a deeper understanding of student-centered learning.
