Avenues Summers

Starting in Middle School, Avenues will offer (but not require) five overseas learning opportunities, with particular focus on China, India, Latin America, Africa and Europe. This will not be the “educational tourism” found in so many program offerings. Of varying lengths, these programs will be highly integrated into Avenues’ world course, with prepping and debriefing central to the experiences.

Four of these sessions are envisioned as six-week summer programs, Avenues Summers, with the fifth a semester abroad program. The great majority of students will likely accumulate over a year abroad—with study on five continents. Initially these programs will be designed and supervised by Avenues but conducted in conjunction with other schools abroad. As additional Avenues campuses open around the world, these programs will be at those facilities

The Summer of 2013: Beijing

The inaugural Avenues Summers six-week program will take place in Beijing, China during June and July, 2013. It will be organized and led by Avenues leadership and faculty, as an extension of the Avenues curriculum and will be available to our current and incoming Upper School students, as well as older Middle School students.

Avenues students going to Beijing will take one or more accredited courses hosted at a leading university, studying subjects such as Chinese culture, Chinese economics and business development and Mandarin language immersion. Additionally, our students will have the opportunity to participate in service learning in China and to explore the leading cities and cultural highlights of the country. Avenues will announce additional details of the Avenues-Beijing summer program over the coming year.

2014 and Beyond: Avenues Summers in South America, Africa, India and Europe

At the beginning of each school year Avenues will announce its Avenues Summers destination, with the objective being that our Middle and Upper School students will each have the opportunity to study on four to five continents prior to graduation. Avenues will select cities that bring our students the opportunity to study and see first-hand diverse histories, economies, social and cultural transformations, ideologies, religions, languages and peoples. Cities such as São Paulo, Berlin, Delhi, Moscow and many others will be considered for Avenues Summers over the coming years.
