There is no single profile of an Avenues student. Avenues expects to have a student community diverse in interests, talents and backgrounds, and the application process is designed to assess all these aspects equally. Avenues seeks students who can thrive in a rigorous and creative learning environment.

Only applications for nursery through ninth grade will be accepted for the 2012-2013 academic year.

For early admissions for the 2013-2014 academic year, Avenues will accept applications for nursery and grades two through ten. Eleventh and twelfth grades will be opened in fall 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Applications for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and grade one will be accepted during the regular admissions season for 2013-2014.

First choice letters or personal recommendations are not encouraged. Each applicant will be assessed according to the requirements stated on the application forms. However, academic recommendations are required, and each applicant for the Middle or Upper School must respond to a creative essay question, as well as submitting a recently graded paper that includes teacher comments.

In our opening year, each student will be given an equal opportunity for acceptance. In subsequent years, Avenues will provide special consideration for siblings of previously enrolled students to help foster a strong sense of community within the school.

We do not require a minimum score for any form of standardized testing. Assessment of each candidate is made from a range of criteria, and standardized test scores are only a small portion of the application that we review.

No. Financial aid is distributed according to the financial need of admitted students. Decisions regarding admissions are made separately from financial aid decisions.

Avenues’ tuition for the 2013-2014 school year will be consistent with tuition charged by other independent “all-through” schools in New York City (those offering nursery to grade 12 or kindergarten through 12th grade). For the 2012-2013 school year, Avenues’ tuition will be $39,750.Tuition includes the full cost of books for students in the Early Learning Center and Lower School; materials; all field trips; and transportation to and from activities during the school day thatare part of the academic program. Mandatory fees are $2,000 and cover lunch, snacks, athletic uniforms and annual investments in educational technology (to fund laptops, tabletsand continuous improvements in our technology offering). Optional fees will be billed to the students’ accounts. Optional fees may include printed textbooks for students in Middle School and Upper School, purchases in the school store, summer programs, after-school programs, etc.Tuition for 2013-2014 has not yet been set.

International students are not required to have taken the ERB, ISEE or other tests. Those students applying to grades 5-10 whose first language is not English will be required to submit official TOEFLJunior (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores. A phone or videoconference interview will also be required for students applying to the upper grades.

The Avenues student body will reflect a wide range of social, cultural and economic backgrounds. Our emphasis on independent study will attract students with a wide range of personal interests, talents and passions. As the number of our campuses abroad develops, so will the international composition of our school.

Avenues will have a multidisciplinary child study team that will work closely with the faculty and administration to ensure every child receives the individualized instruction and support necessary for success. The child study team will support all students—the highest achiever who needs special attention to ensure she is challenged and engaged in her learning; the student who struggles with integration of skills and the curriculum; and the student who needs differentiated instruction to ensure he reaches his full potential.

Internal child evaluations may be initiated by recommendations to the child study team by parents or classroom teachers. After a case conference on an individual child, an instructional plan will be devised for the student and shared with the classroom teachers, the parents, and the student. Only after this process will any outside support be recommended.

A formal modern language immersion program in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish will be introduced in the Early Learning Center.

Part of the Avenues vision is the utilization of the “city as a campus.” Located in the heart of the West Chelsea Arts district and through our exclusive partnership with Chelsea Piers, students will have access to the greatest arts and sports facilities the city has to offer during regular and after-school hours. Other school-based clubs and organizations will also be available.
