Julia is a nationally respected, passionate, progressive and accomplished school leader and educator who joined the Avenues team in 2016.
Prior to joining Avenues, Julia served as executive director of programs, northeast region, for New Leaders. Previously, she served for seven years as assistant principal at Salk School of Science, a highly-selective, admission-only middle school in Manhattan that was awarded a Blackboard Award and Broad Prize during her tenure.
Julia began her career in the classroom as a teacher at School of the Future, a progressive middle-high school in District 2 of NYC public schools, which at the time was renowned for high-quality instruction and professional development for teachers. Julia was a literacy staff developer and model classroom teacher for the district. Julia was also the founding principal of New Visions Charter School for Advanced Math and Science, the highest-performing charter high school in the Bronx, a role she filled for four years.
Prior to that, Julia spent four years as a leadership development facilitator at New Visions for Public Schools and supported a network of district principals in professional development and curriculum design.
Julia graduated magna cum laude from the University of Chicago with a B.A. in English literature. She then went on to earn an M.A. in English literature from Columbia University where she was an NEH Melville Scholar. She also earned an M.Ed in Educational Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University.
