Crain’s New York Business

January 31st, 2011 - “We think parents both here and in other great cities around the world are very interested in their children graduating with a sense of the broader world. As the world evolves, so must our educational system.” So declares Avenues: The World School Chief Executive Officer Chris Whittle, in announcing the revolutionary new pre-K through 12 global education system in today’s issue of Crain’s New York Business. Journalist Miriam Souccar writes that the school already has an impressive academic leadership team in place, headed by co-heads Tyler Tingley, former head of Phillips Exeter Academy, and Robert Mattoon, former head of the Hotchkiss School. Other personnel on board include Gardner Dunnan, Avenues' academic dean, who headed the Dalton School for 23 years, and Nancy Schulman, the head of Avenues' Early Learning Center, who has served as director of the prestigious 92nd Street Y Nursery School for the past 20 years. “Avenues will aggregate the academic expertise and best practices from the finest preparatory schools and universities in the country into a worldwide system of schools,” said Avenues chairman Benno Schmidt. “We don't want to create just another good school—we want to create an exceptional system of schools, one that will become one of the world's foremost.”
