Admissions

Application Process:
Kindergarten and First Grade

Note: Early admissions applications for kindergarten entry in 2013 are being accepted on an interview-wait-list basis. Early admissions applications for grade one are not being accepted at this time.

For a checklist of required forms and steps for application to kindergarten and first grade, as well as all required forms, please click here.

Step 1 Create an account and sign up to attend a parent information event. You will need to create a user name and password. You may use this same information to request a brochure.
Step 2 Complete an online application for admission. The application can be completed over several days.

Note: This is a different registration from the one in Step 1, above. Please note that if you are beginning an application, you must first click ‘Register’ on the application screen to create a new user ID and password. Although you can use the same information as previously, the ID and password you created to make an inquiry, register for an event or request a brochure will not work.

Submit the application, including the $60 non-refundable application fee.

Step 3 Register for the Early Childhood Admissions Assessment (ECAA), administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB).
Step 4 Confirm the parent conversation and child assessment appointments.

Soon after the application has been submitted, the Admissions Office will contact the parent to schedule a parent conversation and child assessment. All visits will be held at Avenues’ headquarters at 11 E. 26th Street, 17th floor.

The parent conversation and child’s assessment will be scheduled for separate dates. Only one parent needs to be present for the child assessment.

Kindergarten and first grade assessments are held on weekday mornings. Children will be asked to participate in a simulated classroom setting where they will have the opportunity to interact with peers and engage in age-appropriate activities. Two teachers will lead each session of four to five children. The sessions last from 45 minutes to one hour. Please plan to arrive five to ten minutes before the scheduled start to allow your child time to settle into the new environment.

The parent conversation will take place during the work week between 9:15 and 4:30 at a meeting with one of the associate directors of admissions. It is an opportunity for us to get to know your family as well as for you to be able to ask us questions about Avenues. Conversations should last from 30 to 45 minutes.

Step 5 Because of the high demand for financial aid, all financial aid funds for 2012 have been exhausted. Additional financial aid funds will be available for applicants entering in 2013. Make sure to indicate your intention to apply for financial aid on the online admissions application. You will then need to complete a separate financial aid application through the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) of NAIS.

For more information on the financial aid process, see Tuition and Financial Aid.

Step 6 Complete the top of the Avenues School Report Form (K and 1) (available with the K-1 checklist and forms). Give it to your child’s current teacher or school director and ask that it be returned directly to us. We will accept the ISAAGNY school report form in lieu of ours if your school uses that form.
Step 7 First Grade Only: Complete the Academic Transcript Release Form (available with the K-1 checklist and forms) and ask that an official copy of your child’s end-of-year report card for the previous school year and the most recent mid-year progress report for the current school year be sent to Avenues
